Facebook’s fight to remove fake news from its platform is ongoing, but here are the steps that they have taken so far.
The company will reportedly start working together with third party fact checkers to ensure that news posted on the platform is legitimate, such as Snopes, FactCheck.org, Politifact, ABC News, and more…
“We’re not looking to get into the grey area of opinion,” Facebook’s VP of News Feed Adam Mosseri tells me. “What we are focusing on with this work is specifically the worst of the work — clear hoaxes that were shared intentionally, usually by spammers, for financial gain.”
Facebook will use the fact-checking services to ensure so that those algorithms can automatically flag a lot of the fake news posted on the platform. They have however in the past blocked a similar service, B.S. ? Detector from accessing it’s API, so users would not be able to use the chrome extension.
This is definitely a step in the right direction, but will it let Facebook eliminate fake news from its’ platform?
Will it ever? With so many people accessing Facebook every day, which have the ability to post virtually anything, is it even possible to prevent fake news from being published?
