Google’s Flutter framework for building iOS and Android apps launches in beta

Subsequent to its announcement last year, Google recently took the stage at MWC (Mobile World Congress) to launch the beta release of Flutter – its free open-source framework designed to help you build iOS and Android applications with a unified codebase.

The SDK lets devs code their apps in the Dart programming language, and packages them along with a rendering engine, as well as the native code needed to run those apps on Android or iOS. It’s designed to offer top-shelf performance, while also making it easy to create interfaces suitable for both platforms, thanks to included UI widgets for each.

Flutter’s objective is to help programmers build native apps in record times – making our lives easier.

Flutter integrates with a variety of integrated development environments including Android Studio, Visual Studio Code, and XCode. It also provides support for around 1,000 packages like Firebase and Facebook Connect. It also supports a feature dubbed Hot Reload, which lets you see changes in your app as you make them while retaining the current state while testing.

Until now, Flutter has been used to build several apps including one for the Google AdWords platform.

It’s interesting to see Google make a push to encourage cross-platform development in the developer community, and I’m thrilled to see better UI and UX become more of a standard in the app development industry.
